When the weather is not cooperating on my days off, I’d normally just dilly-dally in my loft, listening to some Filipino love songs. Songs that travels back the time when you ordinarily had nothing else to do, you turn on the radio and tune in to OPM (Original Pilipino Music). Believe me, my early years in College, I would usually turn my FM Radio on all day, sends music request and dedications anonymously to some of my crushes, ex-es, friends and family. A friend of mine who used to work in our local radio station (or an RJ?) would usually play the ones I personally like. Ok, call me a jologs, minsan, I’d visit the station myself and sit there till late, usually during the “dedication portion”. Kung gusto mong mag request ng kanta sa FM radio, umpisahan mo ng pagbati, like this one.

Hello to Mama Mosy, Papa Manny, Tutoy and Neneng… Hi also to my friends Christel, Katrina and Jhulia and Alberto… hello to my cousins Kuya Kulot and Kuya Choi, and Kuya Williard!

Hi to my classmates Daniel, Celina, Lysa, Patricia, Shobe, Lyka, Van, Glory, and all of you… hi to my teacher Mich, teacher Steph, Mam Ice, hello po miss yu na, hi to Ate Misael, hi to Ate Cha, Kuya Philip, to my cutest ever niece, Khatlyn, I love you alll and also hi sa lahat ng taga Stop n’ Shop.

Tsk, a world without music would not be fair. If you have been around Asia, one of the things you will usually notice when you are staying in the hotels, is that the bands, more often than not, are Filipino. Filipinos are just naturally talented, generally. Don’t you think? Well not everybody. If you’ll ask me to sing in a karaoke, ‘prepare for the umbrellas or it will rain’, like literally. I can scream though but in tune.

If you ask for Mariah Carey, go for Regine Velasquez. She can hit the high notes two or three times higher. Ganun? While I like Pinoy R&B’s, I still enjoy listening to the Pop singers, like Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano or perhaps Claire de la Fuente, remember the song Sayang? Young artists today picks for revivals – it’s pretty much popular in the country anyways. And why OPM music is usually associated with breaking up? I think it is about feeling the passion and joy of being in love day and night. We play music deep from the heart on love, heartbreaks or just plain ecstacy. Asus.

Pinoys love to sing-a-long (korek ka jan), Kara-OK, that is – like ALL.THE.TIME. This is a clear proof of the Filipino’s love for music. Everywhere you go, may it be in bars, in small restaurants or even in carnivals, you’ll always find a Karaoke machine. Just drop a coin or two and pronto, you’ll hear the latest songs on play. What excites me is that, many OPM songs are now available in iTunes. How cool is that?

So what’s your Best OPM Love songs?

  1. I don’t have specific long ballads that I like but I do love listening to M.Y.M.P, Regine Velasquez, Sitti Navarro and Jaya :)

  2. wow opm …. gusto ko rin si lea. no effort ang pagkanta. i dont like regine. natutulili yung tenga ko sa boses niya. i like pinoy bands, jose mari chan, APO, VST & co and the likes. old opm talaga ang maganda. ngaun kasi medyo westernized na yung mga songs.

C, I noticed you also listen to some Filipino singers. Try Nina or Chris Cayzer you’ll probably enjoy it too. Whoops, I forgot Jaya in my list. She’s versatile.

‘Wind, syempre, yung Pinoy Bands, asteg. Next time, I will post Pinoy bands mp3 – kahit di ko na alam karamihan. Iba na kasi ngayon, imagine you can now listen to music online so everybody can access to anywhere, so masyado influential yung nakikita natin from other countries.

Ate Beng, kahit di mo “ibulong” sa akin, grab them, it’s ALL for free (ninakaw ko din naman yan eh? hahahaha). Kindly put your radioblog back or use Box.net, people now uses this player for blogs.

Cheh, I can’t stand novelty songs. Well they are good for the TV, specially the Game Shows. Kathleen loves them, isama mo na diyan yung mga Spaghetting Pababa, Otso Otso, now Itaktak meron syang CD nun. Sabi ko Baduy, sabi nya eh paborito nya daw si Jose ng Eat Bulaga kaya ayun naki TAKTAK na din. :)

“And why OPM music is usually associated with breaking up?”–korek ka dyan!

I love my OPMs! There’s something about listening to OPMs–the way the music sounds reminds me of home. I like Regine (i like to sing “Muli” on the karaoke), Sitti, MYMP, Kitchie, pinoy bands…

  8. 8 K

Sometimes, it’s unbearable but music is like poetry. OPM’s actually helps you realize how badly you’ve been in a relationship. And you couldn’t stop singing the chorus part because it gives you the mood of recollecting your old flings. Hahaha.

My other brother collects OPM, CD, DVD, music videos – etc. I even recorded all those concerts to my Mac when I visited Pinas. He got tons and I refused to take them all.

  9. My tita’s close friend introduced me to OPM in the 70s and 80s (she’s also a “diva”) and the music of this generation was spectacular. She introduced me to bands like “The Circus Band”, “New Minstrels” and her own band “Music and Magic.” The music and lyrics then were so profound and heartfelt.

My favorites from these decades include: “Umagang kay Ganda”, “Lagi na Lang”, “Magsimula ka” and “Suwerte-suwerte lang.” Thank goodness there are CDs in Manila that have these songs.

  10. 10 K

Dazed, I actually love that song, “Magsimula Ka” by Leo Valdes. I agree, the music and lyrics back then were so meaningful, yet so inspiring it can lift your spirit up a bit.

  11. I love the likes of Basil Valdez, Joe Marie Chan, Cynthia Patag , etc..(nahahalata age) but from that era..I think songs/ texts are meaningful..just like you said…inspiring!

Loved the song kasi. Hayan napapakanta tuloy ako lol

  13. 13 K

Thess, Cynthia Patag is an impersonator diba? She can also sing in lipsync with feelings. I recalled nakakatawa sya sa TV sitcom nun nina Goma, ‘Palibhasa Lalake’. But she was a great singer-comedian in TV history. Nasan na kaya sya? Whenever I watch Palibahasa, I would wait until the end part to see kung bubuhusan si Cynthia ng tubig o powder on the face or whatever. Ang saya saya. Hahaha.

Cheh, eh kung kumanta yun parang teka…. I like her better than Ai-Ai tho. Mahanap nga sa youtube.

  14. My fave is MYMP’s Only Reminds Me Of You which is blaring on my mp3 player.

  15. 15 K

Try ‘Nina’ (I mean she won’t smell like teen spirit like Odd) rather listen to Nina, she sings really nice too. :)

  16. k!! thanks!! i love that song, i can sing it by heart.

by a mile, i love old OPM songs especially those composed by songwriting greats like Rey Valera, George Canseco, Willy Cruz, etc. if you listen to the lyrics, they’re almost poetic. they really don’t make them like they used to, i guess…

  17. 17 K

Meeya, I know you’d loved it. Tatak na yan ng HS life (during my time). So everytime I play that song, it flashes back the Sharon-Gabby old movies. Uso pa nun ang mga tambalan sa TV na nakakakilig. Hahaha mga Regal Babies.

  18. 18 mousmous

i love sarah geronimo, mymp and i do like the music of gary valenciano, lea salonga, and sitti! :D

  19. 19 darknight412

I love Lea Salonga’s Promise Me….. I always play it before I go to bed… hahaha!!

  20. hiya! i was desperate looking for Chris Cayzer’s Stay when i came up to your blog! nice one! i downloaded it by the way. thanks a lot! i couldn’t find one kasi from Limewire eh. :) i’m greatly indebt to you!
