Samsung i718I went gaga over my new Samsung i718 Pocket PC phone.

Perhaps the powerful feature of this phone is its large screen which is surprisingly bright and colorful. And even though I’ve been spoiled by this giant touch-screen dialing, the downside however is that it has lack of WiFi feature compared to a few PDA phones. Not only that, it’s a bit expensive. But why bought it? I made a deal with my ‘phone-shop’ friend down the road and traded off my not-so-old Ultra Slim Samsung phone.

I’m trying to get familiar with the use of the stylus pen whenever I send text messages. Besides, it runs with the Windows Mobile 5 version that also comes with a miniature version of Internet Explorer for Web browsing, so I can now send/receive e-mails or chat via msn messenger. Neato.

Again, even with the lack of 3G support, I was not disappointed because at least it also comes with Bluetooth 2.0 feature.

Here’s the review.

Samsung i718The good: The Samsung SGH-i718 is a decent Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC device with a 2.0-megapixel camera, quadband GSM support, and integrated e-mail support. It also comes with haptic technology, which provides tactile feedback when dialing with the touch screen.

Samsung i718The bad: The Samsung SGH-i718 is too expensive for the features it offers. The haptic technology does not extend to all of the phone’s applications and we had to enter text with a stylus, either via handwriting recognition or a tiny virtual keyboard. It also does not have 3G support.

Samsung i718The bottom line: While we love the tactile feedback of the haptic touch screen and we think the feature set is pretty decent, the Samsung SGH-i718’s high price tag and lack of 3G support suggests to us that you should look elsewhere for your Pocket PC needs. – Cnet Review

“Confidence has a style”. No kidding, I’m loving Samsung (or AnyCall?) brands these days. Mmmm, must be the photo quality which is actually pretty good, with sharp edges and true-to-life colors.

  1. It looks great. Love the color!

  2. Looks cool, the most I do with my cell phone is to receive/make phone call, I don’t think I can handle a gadget like that. :)

  3. whoa that is really neat K. but with no 3G? (scratching my head).

Hi Atomic, I actually preferred the silver but there’s no other choice, besides only the orange color phone is in English.

Ginger, at first it was annoying but I can manage. Here too, people likes using their phone “to talk” not “to text”. Well some kids these days prefers latest mobile phones, they are usually not the smart consumer (ehem that includes me) who looks more for a phone with mp3 & camera feature rather than just a “phone” of itself. That’s why, speaking of gizmos, HK makes good business on mobile phones.

Blue, it’s actually a quadrophone (meaning can be used anywhere in EU, Canada or US). 3G network was launched here few years ago, 2002 I think. But now that most nokia NSeries phones are equipped with 3G features, the local network expanded the service for 3G users because you can do more than you ever imagined, make real-time two-way video calls, watch Mobile TV, download full stereo-quality songs – but I don’t think I’ll be using all of that, the better you have those feature, meaning the more you pay for the service.

Teka lang, iPhone is coming end of this year so malamang….

  5. I´m glad you´re back, you gadget freak

    hi k,

sa mga tipo ng taong katulad nating dalawa, i think ‘di natin kailangan ng rason if we feel like buying something. i said katulad nating dalawa dahil i am also planning to buy a new phone (Nokia N95). my current one, also a samsung is just a few months old, pero di ko na siya type (for some reasons).

would you believe I haven’t changed my phone in 4 years now. I was always planning to buy one but never got the chance to do so. I want your ultra slim samsung. I was eyeing to buy that one!

inthesity, as you know I live in a very influential city. That pretty much explains.

Beng, mismo. If you like it, buy it. If you’re broke, swipe it. If you can’t resist it, try it. So there, wag tipirin ang sariling kagustuhan diba? :)

Duke, in HK, uso ang trade-in. So I paid half the price and traded in my Ultra slim. Pero if you are a “text-user” person, Nokia suits you best. Everyone loves Nokia diba? For me, I don’t want to wear an expensive uniform, so dapat iba ang gamitin.

I saw this phone, as well as the Nokia N95 and N93i, but decided to get a Sony Ericsson K810i. With the new K850i coming out with a 5MP camera, I knew this one would be cheap. I got it second hand, with only a month of use.

I normally don’t like “candybar” shaped phones, but after a while and knowing that I couldn’t get a better camera phone than this at this price, 3.2MP, I got it and I haven’t regretted it. I have about 80 games on it right now and the 240×320 screen is crystal clear.

Will I change for the K850i or the W960i when they come out? Maybe. But I already have gotten a M2 micro memory stick of 2GB for this baby and I am happy.

The K810i is part of the Cyber-shot phones.
